the The future of artificial intelligence research The report, published in March 2025, aims to set out the trajectory of AI research clearly and in an organized manner. The report was led by outgoing AAAI President Francesca Rossi and covers 17 different AI topics. Members of the report team, and other selected AI practitioners, participate in a series of video discussions covering selected chapters of the report.
In the fifth discussion of the group, the three participants addressed the topic of AI agents. Specifically, they cover the following topics:
- How multi-agent systems have evolved from rule-based systems to complex collaborative frameworks built on generative AI, and what’s really different about the modern idea of an agent AI system.
- Opportunities and challenges of agentic AI; Explore how LLMs enable more flexible decision making while introducing new questions about efficiency, complexity, openness, trust and reliability.
- How to address alignment and governance issues in agentic AI systems.
