The Zyrtec and Xyzal mark are placed by FDA for a new side effect. How do you know when to see your doctor

A prescription allergic drugs such as Xyzal (Xyzal) has become common drugs for many people in the United States who suffer from seasonal symptoms such as water and sneezing eyes, but now the FDA (FDA) indicates that both drugs have a new risk.

The FDA (FDA) has recently published warning About these antihistamines, saying that patients who suddenly stop taking these medications after long -term use “may suffer from rare but severe itching.” Itching, also known as prureitus, occurred in patients who were taking Cetirizine and Levocetirizine daily for a few months or even years.

The FDA (FDA) estimates that 62.7 million beams without a prescription from Cetirizine and Levocetirizine were purchased in 2022. In the same year, about 26.8 million Cetirizine and Levocetirizine were extracted for both OTC products and medical prescriptions from American external pharmacies. Given that the sensitivity gets worse, this is partly due to the fact that climate change creates the seasons of pollen longer and more intense, it will not be surprising if these numbers continue to climb.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided to issue this warning after identifying 209 cases around the world – 180 cases for CIIRIZINE, 27 for Levocetirizine and two for both of them – from this side effect that was reported between April 2017 and July 2023. However, there may be more cases, because these are those that were reported only to FDA. Interestingly, although most patients who suffered from this severe itch were taking these antihistamines for more than three months, some had this reaction less than one month after use.

Because of these results, the Food and Drug Administration will now include a warning about the descriptive information of Cetirizine and Levocetirizine prescriptions. The administration also requires that the manufacturers add this warning to the signs of drug facts to OTC versions.

For those who dealt with this side effect, restarting or draining antihistamines after restarting often solve the problem.

According to FDA, the most common side effects of sterieseine and liotioterine are fatigue, drowsiness, sore throat, cough, dehydration in the mouth, bleeding, fever, diarrhea and vomiting.

When do you call your doctor?

If you stop taking OTC Cetirizine or Levocetirizine and develop intense itching within a few days after you are using medicine daily for several months to years, you should contact your doctor. If you are planning to take these medications for a long period of time, you should also discuss positives and negatives with your doctor before starting.
